Reason for this post:

BBC's Radio 3 station has just released 10 years of archival recordings for FREE

"Explore ten years of Radio 3 on-location recordings from 2000 to the present in our World Music archive, recording the life and musical traditions of countries ranging from Brazil to North Korea and Cuba to Turkmenistan."

More generally:

Radio 3 is the BBC's classical and/or more-serious music sort of station.

You can always listen "live" to Radio 3, and there are many other programs to listen to or download, besides the 'world music' programs mentioned directly above.

Right now the BBC "Proms" are happening -- in the UK a "prom" isn't a high school dance, but a popular music concert, generally of a classical bent. The BBC Proms take place over a couple of weeks at the Royal Albert Hall in London and are big and popular performances. You can listen to these live, or on a podcast, etc.

Even more generally:

All the BBC's radio stations are available all over the world to listen to and download programs from, for FREE.

BBC Radio is a huge public-service organization and is the biggest radio presence in the UK, with a lot of interesting output, from comedy shows to radio plays to "books at bedtime" to news broadcasts to political shows to interviews to -- obviously -- rock, pop, country, etc. shows.

The stations, with my stab at describing them, are:

World Service
News bulletins every hour, some cultural programs, interviews, documentaries, etc. Offers broadcasts in many languages and is mainly aimed at non-UK listeners.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/

Radio 1
youngish and more trendy than Radio 2 - rock, pop, dance music
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/

Radio 1X
RnB, Hip Hop
http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/

Radio 2
most-listened-to radio station in the UK. more middle of road and staid than Radio 1 - general rock and pop, older djs
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/

Radio 3
classical, more serious art and culture
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/

Radio 4
no music. many news broadcasts, political discussions, interviews, books read aloud, radio plays, quiz shows, comedies, etc. sometimes seen to be kind of bourgeois and middle-class, middle-brow. something people's dads listen to, until suddenly you are that age yourself and find that you listen to it. it plays a big part in the politics of the country and is seen to have a bit of a liberal bias, even though it's government-funded.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/

Radio 5 Live
live news and live sport
live "talk" radio sort of programs, call-ins, news briefs, interviews, some sports broadcasting
http://www.bbc.co.uk/5live/

Radio 5 Sports extra
um, extra sporty stuff
http://www.bbc.co.uk/5livesportsextra/

Radio 6
started up after i left the UK. as far as I know, it's sort of 'alternative' music, whatever that term means these days, and fills a gap between Radio 1 and Radio 2. (not to sound snarky about it, because it probably would be the station i liked the most, out of those three!) it was meant to be closed this year, but a big Facebook campaign to save it that got a lot of musicians involved convinced the government not to chop it.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/

Radio 7
I think it's for repeats and old classic radio programs - I'm not sure
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio7/

Asian Network
